Razldazl Marilyn running in the Corn Cuchulainn at Harolds Cross

DOGGY people can, occasionally, have strange stories to tell about greyhounds under their care and one such story doing the rounds at the moment concerns a bitch called Razldazl Marilyn, which is attached to the kennels of high profile trainer Dolores Ruth.

Dolores was at the English Derby last year with another of her greyhounds, Razldazl George, when Razldazl Marilyn, which was being minded by an owner of the one of the greyhounds she trains, was stolen.

The heartless thieves burnt the ear of Razldazl Marily with acid, obviously to erase the ear mark by which she can be identified, and this acid also seriously burned parts of her body. She was also badly abused and mistreated.

The man with whom Razldazl Marilyn was kennelled, John Kelleher, of Straffan, Co Kildare, subsequently did everything he could to try and get her back, including the insertion of a notice in the Sporting Press offering a € 1,000 reward for her recovery.

The offer of the money obviously appealed to the thieves and, after eleven days, they contacted Kelleher and told him that he would get the bitch back once the money was paid over to them.

Kelleher felt that he was left with no choice but to hand over the € 1,000, foolish and all as that decision might appear, and one can well imagine his anger on discovering the damage that had been done to the bitch.

She couldn’t be earmarked again and had to be micro-chipped, but, with good care, she recovered well and did reasonably good time in her first trial back. Subsequently, she was to reveal quite outstanding ability and, indeed, she went to England on February 28 and beat some very good greyhounds over 678 metres.

She was actually 5/4 favourite to win a secondround heat of the Irish Cesarewitch at Mullingar last Saturday night, but she was beaten into fifth place. Hopefully, she will enjoy better luck in other upcoming events, to give the story the kind of flavour that everybody would like to see.
