English Greyhound Derby – 31st May to 29th June

Droopys Jet and Ballymac Vic are set for a mouth-watering clash in Saturday’s 2013 Greyhound Derby final as the Irish pair look to land the biggest prize in the sport, but there’s an abudance of talent heading into the blue riband event with all six dogs in with a genuine chance of bagging the coveted trophy.

When the two met in the quarter-finals it was Droopys Jet that propelled to victory and he was paw-perfect in the semi-final with another authoritative victory, but Ballymac Vic was equally as imperious in his final eliminator and recorded a faster time, so there are sure to be fireworks with them housed next to each other in traps two and three respectively.

They may dominate the betting, but they will have a strong opponent on their inside in the red jacket as Charlie Lister aims to win his seventh Greyhound Derby with the raw Sidaz Jack, who will be challenging the fancied pair at the first bend with his electric early dash from the boxes.

Lister’s youngster pinged the lids in the semi-final, but Ballymac Vic duly asserted his class down the back straight, but there could well be some bumping at the first bend between the inside triumvirate and the outside three may look to capitalise.

Bittles Bar and Screen Critic are another pair with searing early pace, but the former was no match for Droopys Jet in his semi-final, whilst Kevin Hutton’s Screen Critic has tasted defeat on his last couple of starts and will need to produce a career best to get his head in front.

Airlie Impact will complete the super sextet and although he has qualified with aplomb over the last few weeks he could well struggle to land a blow, but with first bend scrimmaging he could look to take advantage and his strong-running nature will see him doing his best work at the end of the 480m highlight.

Result 2013 – Greyhound Derby Final

  • 1st – Sidaz Jack 6/1
  • 2nd – Airlie Impact 14/1
  • 3rd – Ballymac Vic 9/4

Sidaz Jack produced a sensational performance to hand Charlie Lister his seventh victory in the Greyhound Derby as the puppy pinged the lids and managed to hold off a spirited effort from Ballymac Vic and the staying-on Airlie Impact to land the coveted competition at Wimbledon.

Lister’s raider managed to fend off the speedy Droopys Jet at the first bend, but Ballymac Vic was a menace during the first half of the contest, but Liam Dowling’s Irish charge was unable to get on the bunny and Sidaz Jack continued to keep his head in front turning for home and he held on to win by a length-and-a-quarter, with 14/1 outsider Airlie Impact taking second and Ballymac Vic completing the first three.

English Derby History

Since it was established in 1927 the English Greyhound Derby is the toughest competition to win as the elite do battle over a gruelling qualifying process.

Originally run at White City until 1985, the Greyhound Derby now takes place at Wimbledon Stadium over a distance over 480 metres.

In a demanding competition, greyhounds will have to progress through several heats, before the top six remain and battle it out for Derby supremacy in the final.

The roll of honour lists such greats as Mick The Miller, who was a phenomenon back in the 1920s and more recently the likes of Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk have bagged the crown in consecutive years.

The undisputed champion of the current training crop is Charlie Lister, who bagged his sixth training crown with 2011 winner Taylors Sky, who set the track record of 28.17 seconds in the final.

With current sponsors William Hill boosting the win fund to a staggering £125,000 for the 2012 renewal, the English Greyhound Derby is certainly the most sought after competition in the greyhound calendar.
